How Physical Access Control Works: QR Code, Wi-Fi, LTE and Cloud

The connectivity and access control options available with LabKey: QR code, cloud and remote management, Wi-Fi, LAN cable, and LTE.

LabKey’s access control works both locally (stand-alone, without an internet connection) and in the cloud, with different connectivity options depending on the installation context.

QR Code

With the Virtual QR Code plugin, you can enable access via QR code scanned directly from the cloud panel, even where there’s no physical reader installed at the entry point. The user’s QR code can also be generated and exported from the user management section.

Cloud and remote management

All control units are managed from the cloud through the Manage panel: user creation, permissions, logs, and control unit configuration are all available remotely, from anywhere.

Wi-Fi and LAN cable (Ethernet)

The Basic and Light control units connect via Wi-Fi; the PRO control unit also supports connection via LAN cable (RJ45), useful in environments with a wired network or where the Wi-Fi signal isn’t reliable. See control unit types for details on each model.

LTE (for sites without a fixed network)

For construction sites, outdoor areas, or properties without a fixed network, the LTE control unit has a built-in cellular module with an included SIM and IT/EU/Extra-EU coverage. LabKey control units don’t use GSM/2G modules (a technology being progressively phased out by carriers), but rather the LTE module, which provides broader, longer-term coverage.

Offline operation (stand-alone)

Even without an internet or cloud connection, every control unit has a stand-alone mode to keep managing PIN, NFC, and QR code access locally.
